My name is Daniel Brooks.
I used to be an Army vehicle mechanic.
When I was young, I believed that with a wrench, a welding machine, and enough time, there was nothing that couldn’t be fixed.
Until one overseas convoy mission, when our vehicle was hit by the force of an explosion.
When I woke up, I was lying in a military hospital. My left leg had already undergone its first surgery. Over the next few years, I went through several more reconstructive treatments.
The doctors saved my leg, but they couldn’t restore my ability to walk normally.
Now, I have to wear a leg brace and rely on a cane to get around. Rainy days are especially hard. My left leg feels as if an old iron nail is slowly being twisted tighter from the inside.
I used to be able to stand in a repair shop and work for more than ten hours.
After returning home from the military, standing for just ten minutes sometimes became difficult.
But later, I learned that this was not the last test life had in store for me.
My daughter’s name is Emily.
She is nine years old.
Not long after Emily was born, she was diagnosed with a serious congenital heart condition.
While other children ran around in the yard, she often could only sit by the window and watch.
She couldn’t play for too long, and she couldn’t run too fast. When she wasn’t feeling well, she would lie in bed, holding the rabbit stuffed animal that had been washed so many times it had begun to fade, and watch the little birds landing on the branches outside the door.
Her favorite time was the morning after it rained.
Because after the rain, birds would come to the yard looking for food.

After leaving the military, I could no longer do jobs that required standing for long hours. To take care of my 9-year-old daughter, Emily, who has a serious congenital heart condition, I started making small metal crafts in my garage at home.
Emily’s health is fragile, and many days she can only lie in bed, watching the birds and the rain outside her window. Once, she asked me:
“Dad, after the rain, will the birds come back?”
