The Two Stars Homecoming Bell

My name is Ethan Walker.

My father was an Army National Guard mechanic. He was killed in Iraq when I was eight. I remember his boots by the back door and the smell of oil on his jacket. I wish I remembered more.

Years later. I joined the Army and became a vehicle mechanic. An explosion in Afghanistan damaged my right leg. lower back. and hearing in one ear. I came home able to walk. but unable to return to the heavy repair work I had always depended on.

I need to stay close enough to take her to appointments and help on the days she cannot manage alone. A regular job is no longer possible. but the trips to the hospital. groceries. horse feed. heating bills. and repairs around the property do not stop.

So I make these bells.

Each one starts with two worn horseshoes. I scrub away the dirt. grind down the rough edges. and work around the old nail holes. Some crack. Some are too thin to use. The ones strong enough to use still take hours to clean. balance. and assemble.

My leg makes me stop often. The grinder worsens the ringing in my ear. If a chain hangs crooked. I take it apart and start again.

Nothing about them is quick.

The horseshoes once carried weight over hard ground. I leave enough of their marks visible for people to see that. Then I add two hand-finished stars and a bell below.

People hang them beside a front door as a wish for safe return. Some place them in a garden to remember someone they miss. Others give them to a child leaving home. a loved one serving far away. or someone beginning a difficult new chapter.

The two stars can represent the people who matter most to your family.

I make every piece myself at my father's old workbench.

Each horseshoe has to be cleaned. inspected. matched. and fitted by hand. Some are too worn to use. Others need to be taken apart and adjusted until the stars. chains. and bell hang correctly.

Because every horseshoe carries different marks. no two pieces will ever look exactly the same.
